Is trading halal? Stocks, margin and short selling

Beginner · 5 min read · figures as of Nov 5, 2026
Short answer

There is no single answer for everyone: rulings are a matter for scholars. Most consider buying shares of a company with permissible business and moderate debt acceptable. Most consider trading on borrowed money (margin), short selling and interest-bearing products impermissible.

When a stock counts as halal.

Many Islamic funds and indices rely on AAOIFI Standard No. 21. Under it the company's core business must be permissible (not alcohol, gambling, pork, interest-based banking or insurance), interest-bearing debt must be under 30% of market value, interest-bearing deposits and securities also under 30%, and income from impermissible activity under 5% of revenue.

Purifying income.

If a small part of the company's income still comes from impermissible activity, the matching share of the profit is given away as charity (sadaqah). This is called purification.

Ways of trading.

Most consider buying a stock with your own money acceptable, and swing trading too if the shares are fully paid. Views on day trading differ. Margin involves an interest-bearing loan from the broker, short selling means selling what you do not own, and many classify options and futures as gharar, excessive uncertainty.
