How to choose a broker to buy US stocks
Check five things: the licence and who holds your securities; access to the NYSE and NASDAQ; fees for trading, custody and withdrawals; how to fund and withdraw from your country; and the tax documents the broker issues at year end.
The broker must be licensed by its country's regulator. Find out where your securities are held (the custodian) and what happens to them if the broker fails: client assets must be segregated from the broker's own.
For US stocks you need direct access to the NYSE and NASDAQ, not just mirror instruments. Pre-market and after-hours trading is a plus.
Count not only the trading commission but custody, inactivity, currency conversion and withdrawal fees. On a small account fixed fees eat returns fastest.
Check how to fund the account from your country, how long transfers take and whether withdrawals are restricted. Do a small test withdrawal before moving the main amount.
US dividends are subject to US withholding tax; a double tax treaty may lower the rate. The broker should issue an annual statement you can use to declare income at home.
